The motorcycle, by design, does not create a shield or barrier of protection for the driver like a car or truck would. Therefore, motorcycle drivers may be more susceptible to injury if an accident were to occur given the direct impact their bodies might have with objects or other vehicles. Unfortunately, drivers involved in motorcycle accidents often incur severe bodily injuries and may be inundated with medical bills and expenses. Here are some sobering statistics:

  • When a motorcycle accident happens, there is a reported 80% chance of injury or death on a motorcycle as compared to about 20% for passenger vehicles (link)
  • Motorcycle accident deaths and injuries averaged about 4,500 / 87,000 annually during the five year period 2010-2014, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • Motorcycle accident statistics from the CDC cited in an article in Ride Apart show that the highest percentage of injuries were to the leg and foot area, approximately 30%. Head and neck injuries made up the next highest category, approximately 22%.

Considering there are usually two parties involved in every accident, whether it is the road maintenance crew or another driver, your accident may not have been your fault and another party may be responsible. Despite the amount of effort or care you put into riding a motorcycle, accidents may be inevitable and injuries may occur. The most common injury-causing type of motorcycle accident occurs when semi trucks are changing lanes or when automobile drivers open their car doors without heeding to motorcycle drivers. Glancing in the rear-view mirror or in a blind spot quickly may not be sufficient in order to spot motorcycles prior to taking action. Each type of incident could cause a motorcyclist to swerve in order to avoid collision, or result in impact of the motorcyclist with the car door or semi-truck. Regardless, an accident will most likely cause injury given the composition of a motorcycle.

Insurance Coverage for Motorcycle Accidents

A motorcycle accident and personal injury attorney such as Jonathan Wade will have the experience and knowledge to thoroughly analyze your matter and ensure you get all of the compensation you deserve. An insurance company may offer you a settlement that shortchanges the monetary relief you deserve. An accident attorney will be sure all sources are exhausted and all possible parties adequately compensate you.

There are many types of insurance coverage available to injured parties, including liability insurance, uninsured motorist coverage, or UM as it is referred to in Georgia, and med pay. Liability insurance engages if the at-fault driver has insurance coverage for that vehicle. Georgia has minimum required insurance limits, which are set at $25,000 per individual and $50,000 per occurrence for bodily injury. These amounts can be grossly insufficient based on the type of injury you are facing and the medical bills and long-term care you may endure. On the other hand, uninsured motorist, or UM, covers an injured motorist’s losses when the driver that caused the accident has no insurance or insufficient insurance to cover all of your damages and losses. In addition, med pay may be available based on your personal insurance coverage, which covers many of your medical expenses and any passenger’s damages as well. Med pay applies regardless of who was at fault or caused the accident, which means even if you were at fault for the accident, it can be used to cover your medical expenses.
