A man has been arrested and he is facing multiple charges in connection with the death of 22-year-old Lithia Springs woman Katelyn Keith.
Police say 20-year-old Erion James Dix was using his cellphone during a fatal two-vehicle smash-up that occurred last month.
Douglasville Police Major J.R. Davidson said Dix is facing a felony charge of vehicular homicide as well as several misdemeanors following the April 2 crash.
Dix surrendered on Sunday after formal charges were laid. He was released on Monday on a $54,000 bond.
The crash took place around 5 p.m. on Riverside Parkway near Roberts Road.
Keith’s one-year-old, Zion, was in the backseat of her car when the accident occurred.
The boy suffered a broken leg and a concussion, and he was taken to a hospital.
A GoFundMe page has been launched to raise funds for his care. As of Friday afternoon, $2,815 of the $10,000 target was reached.
The toddler is in the care of his father, Isaiah Spann.
Police say Dix was using his cellphone and he crossed the center line and turn lane before hitting Keith’s car head-on.
Davidson said investigators took about three weeks to determine the appropriate charges for Dix.
He is now accused of reckless driving, violating the Hands-Free Georgia Act, and failing to maintain lane, according to jail records.
The Hands-Free Georgia Act went into effect on July 1, 2018. It prohibits drivers from holding or otherwise supposed a stand-alone electronic device or telecommunications device.
Reading, composing, or sending a text message of any kind is also against the law. In addition, drivers are not allowed to broadcast, watch, or read a video.
