Who’s Dropping the Ball When it Comes to Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect in Georgia?

It is really hard for people to decide when it’s time to move their loved one into a nursing home in Georgia. For most people, they understand that their mom or dad will likely die in the nursing home. The odds of them coming back home are slim to none. This is why it’s so heartbreaking to learn that nursing home resident are subjected to neglect and abuse. And, it’s even more horrifying to learn that complaints filed with local authorities have absolutely no teeth.

In a recent study conducted in Georgia, researchers found that, for the most part, all nursing home complaints filed with the police are for “information purposes” only. They aren’t forwarded to the state or federal agencies. There is no follow-up. Nothing is done at all. Meanwhile, your loved ones are left to fend off abuse in a strange nursing home. Something needs to change.

One of the nursing homes under recent scrutiny is PruittHealth in Augusta. There have been numerous complaints of neglect and abuse filed with the local police. However, the study found that not one of these were ever formally reported to the relevant State agencies. They also found that, when the nursing home eventually reported these complaints, they never matched the stories given to the cops.

For example, one patients called the cops after being slapped and berated by one of the nursing home staff. When the nursing home reported the incident, they listed it as a medical complaint. The right hand simply doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. And, it appears that everyone is dropping the ball when it comes to nursing home abuse and neglect in Georgia.
